Intergenerational Theater Workshop

INTERGENERATIONAL APRIL VACATION THEATER WORKSHOP

Amherst - Hampshire Shakespeare Company and the Renaissance Center Theater Company present “Comedy for All Ages”, an April vacation week theater workshop for children ages 8-12 and seniors 65+, April 21-25, 2008, from 9 am to 1 pm.
Tuition is $120 for the week, and includes museum admission for one day, and snacks. Registration deadline is March 31. For registration and information, call the Renaissance Center at 413-577-3600, or e-mail renaissance@english.umass.edu.
Participants will draw inspiration from the gallery exhibits at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art; then work together at Applewood Retirement Community in Amherst to come up with an improvised play which will be performed for family, friends and the public on the last day of the workshop on stage at The Carle!

This unique intergenerational program brings together young and old to create theater together under the direction of comedian Steve Henderson – best known as Gerry Atric for his one-man shows at the Majestic Theater in Springfield. In addition to being a popular stand-up comic, Steve is an actor, director and theater educator, and is Education Director for Hampshire Shakespeare Company.

Since 1992, Hampshire Shakespeare Company has offered exciting theatrical experiences for the children and adults of the Pioneer Valley. We start with the simple premise that anyone should be able to engage fully in the creation and performance of a play in an atmosphere of creative collaboration, low pressure and lots of fun.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE

SHAKESPEARE’S MEASURE FOR MEASURE AT THE RENAISSANCE CENTER

Amherst – Sexual passion and religious righteousness, humanity and hypocrisy, morality and manipulation. It’s no wonder Shakespeare’s darkest comedy, Measure for Measure, has been the subject of controversy from its first appearance onstage over four hundred years ago to the present day. This spring, the Renaissance Center Theatre Company, based at the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies, brings this classic play of lust battling law to the Pioneer Valley for five days only, starting on Shakespeare’s birthday (April 23rd). “Not only is this one of Shakespeare’s funniest – and simultaneously most disturbing – plays,” notes director Matteo Pangallo, “but we’re staging it with a fellowship of some of the finest actors in the area. It’s rare that you find such a confluence of theatrical fortune around one production.”

Measure for Measure runs April 23-26 at 7:30pm and April 27 at 2pm, at the UMass Renaissance Center (650 East Pleasant Street in Amherst); tickets are $10 ($5 students/seniors). For information and reservations, call 413-577-3600 or e-mail renaissance@english.umass.edu. Seating is limited, so reservations are strongly encouraged.

The show will be performed in a vacant space that is being converted to a black box theatre for the event, in lieu of the projected replica of a 16th century Great Hall to be built on the grounds of the Center. The Great Hall is a keystone project of the Center and will be a space for performances, concerts, classes, and special collections, open to the public and the Five Colleges. The Center’s director of programming, Lucinda Kidder, observes, “It’s fitting that Measure for Measure, which was probably the first play staged at Shakespeare’s rebuilt Globe Theatre in 1604, will be the first full production by the theater company that will eventually perform in the Great Hall.”

Pangallo, formerly the founding artistic director of the Salem Theatre Company and an assistant director for the Rebel Shakespeare Company, holds an MA in Shakespearean Studies from King’s College London and has worked as a dramaturgical assistant at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The cast includes an array of talented performers from across the region and the Five Colleges. Noted local actor (and WFCR afternoon music host) Walter Carroll plays the role of the Duke. Marina Morrow, most recently seen in the role of Katherine in the Majestic Theater’s The Taming of the Shrew, plays Isabella, with celebrated local actor Phillip Isermann in the role of Angelo.

The Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies is an internationally leading center for the interdisciplinary study of the culture and achievements of the Renaissance period (1400-1700). The Center contributes to the field of Renaissance studies through research, teaching, and outreach to the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus, the Amherst community, and beyond. For more information about the Center and a full calendar of activities, visit the Center’s web page at www.umass.edu/renaissance.

lighting workshop

Subject: GRP FREE Light Tech Workshop
Date: February 11, 2008
Time: 7-9pm
Location: Memorial Hall 198 Main Street, Monson, MA 01057

Details: Monday, February 11, from 7-9pm Greene Room Productions is holding a FREE Light Tech Workshop. Richard Dionne, local light, sound, and camera technician will be instructing. Rich has worked locally with many different theatre companies including Panache (at City Stage), Exit 7 ( Ludlow ), The Majestic Theatre (W. Springfield), Shea Theatre (Turners Falls) to name just a few. He began his work as a novice taking a lighting course from the Washington Street Players. After gaining basic knowledge of how a theatrical lighting system works, he started getting jobs to learn more. Now, years later, Rich has an overflowing schedule of productions in which he is employed to run lights, sound, and camera. Rich Dionne is a prime example of one who pursued an interest, taught himself through experience, and is now a successful technician in the theatre world. Greene Room Productions hopes to attract others throughout the region that have similar interests, and would like to start their technician education. GRP’s FREE Light Tech Workshop is a beginner class. Because the workshop will take place at GRP’s Performance Venue, Memorial Hall, 198 Main Street , Monson , MA 01057 , students will have the opportunity to view a real lighting system. Rich will introduce students to the different varieties of lights available, how the system is hooked up, the proper safety precautions, and how to operate the light board. Students will have an opportunity at
the end of the workshop to design a mini scene, and present their
lighting ideas to the class! Abby Gregory ( Wales , MA),
GRP’s lighting “intern” for the upcoming musical,
“The Last Five Years” (February 22-24, 29 & March 1-2, 7-9)
will be attending the GRP FREE Light Tech Workshop as an

Monson – Greene Room Productions presents, “The Last Five Years”, a wildly funny and crushingly sad musical written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. This modern Broadway pop musical has a jazzy flair focusing on the lives of a couple as they wind their way through the ups and downs of their relationship. This “relationship carousel” is presented “in-the-round” to bring this intimate show closer to the audience. The lead female character, Cathy Hyatt (played by Erin Greene), remembers the last five years, starting in the present and reflects back to the beginning her relationship with Jamie. The lead male character, Jamie Wellerstein (played by Dave Wallace) starts from the beginning of his relationship with Cathy and works his way to the end, in the present. The audience will take away a great deal of food for thought as they can see both sides of a story and the importance of communication, honesty and perceptions in a relationship.

The Last Five Years will be performed at Memorial Hall, 198 Main Street in Monson at the following times: February 22-24, 29, March 1-2 & 7-9 Saturday & Sunday at 8 PM and Sundays 2PM. Ticket prices range from $12 - $15. Group rates are available. For more information call 413 668-7284, mail GRP, P.O. Box 565, Monson, MA 01057 or http://www.greeneroomproductions.com/
